Scotchman Industries marks 45 years of manufacturing hydraulic ironworkers

May 23, 2012

Today, Scotchman Industries is recognized as the largest manufacturer and supplier of hydraulic ironworkers in North America, but 45 years ago the company was only a small salvage business with six employees.  Since the purchase of the hydraulic ironworker patent in 1967, Scotchman has grown to be a leader in manufacturing and the ironworker has since revolutionized the metal fabrication industry.

With financial assistance from the Small Business Administration, Arthur A. Kroetch (founder of Scotchman Industries) purchased the U.S. patent for the Dvorak Hydraulic Ironworker.  The machine was the first of its kind to be able to punch, bend, and shear metal using hydraulic pressure with 35-ton force.  The production of this new model allowed the fabrication company to expand from salvage work and farm product manufacturing into a global distributor.

Headquartered in Philip, S.D., which has a population of 779 residents, the Scotchman facility now encompasses 120,000 square feet of manufacturing space and employs 65 people with a network of over 500 distributors nationwide.  In addition, Scotchman sells its products in over 50 countries with consistent markets in Mexico and Canada and fair markets across the Pacific Rim.  The company has built a strong reputation for providing quality fabrication solutions for customers across the globe.

The complete product line includes 13 models of hydraulic ironworkers, ranging from 45 to 150 tons, in three distinctive styles:  1) Component Tool Table design (allows the operator to use different tools including punch, angle shear, channel shear, solid round and square rod shear, flat bar shear, rectangle notcher, 90º V notcher, press brake, pipe notcher, tube shear; 2) Fully Integrated Ironworker with five built-in tools consisting of a punch, angle shear, flat bar shear, round & square rod shear and a rectangle notcher; and 3) Dual Operator Machine where two operators work simultaneously without loss of speed or pressure.

Along with the ironworker line, Scotchman offers a full line of manual to fully-automatic Circular Cold Saws, including pivot and column designs for ferrous and nonferrous applications.  Scotchman is also the North American importer of ALMI Tube & Pipe Notchers, available in three styles:  Manual, Electric, and Abrasive Grinder/Notchers.

For nearly half a century, these high-quality products have helped metal fabricators increase efficiency and meet the demand of the ever-changing and expanding market.  From general and heavy-duty metal fabrication to farm use, shipbuilding, technical schools, the US military, Fortune 500 Companies, and the one-man hobby garage shop, Scotchman is the solution preferred by metal fabricators.
