A durable metal cutting saw is indispensable for those in industrial and construction fields, but knowing exactly which type of saw is needed can be a challenge. With all the different types and models available on the market today, it’s important to first assess a number of factors regarding the material being cut.
Fabricating equipment is designed to handle a variety of metals, including iron, steel, and aluminum, but these machines can also be used to cut materials like wood or plastic. After the types of materials have been identified, next consider the angle and shape of the cut, the size and thickness of the material, and whether or not the material can get hot or needs to remain cold during cutting.

Once these factors have been outlined, it will be easier to identify the pros and cons of different machines. Cold saws, for instance, are best suited for cutting sheet metal whereas band saws can cut wood, metal, or even stone. The band saw, however, is an abrasive saw and may damage any coatings on the metal.
Band saws are stationary with either vertical or horizontal bands. Dependable, straight cutting machines, bands saws have a swing head for mitering without material movement and are ideal for bundle cutting. For cutting ferrous or non-ferrous material, Kroetch recommends a Scotchman Cold Saw. Circular cold sawing is unique in that the blade turns at a very low RPM which produces fast, burr-free cuts without sparks. And, unlike abrasive band saws, heat is transferred away from the cutting surface so that the object being cut will stay cold. A coolant system is necessary to keep the cold saw blade cool and lubricated.
